Ten-day school report
Rufus has been with us for 10 days now, so we are getting a pretty good idea of what he is like.
Obedience - 7/10. He can be very obedient, but only when he feels like it. Fortunately, he tends to feel like it when I need him to be good, so I don't mind that much. It is early days and will come with time.
Behaviour - 6/10. This would be 9/10 provided I added the rider that he is good if under direct supervision. The incident of the excess fat bowl proves his real character when unsupervised. Also a learning curve for me. Put ALL temptation well out of the way, especially when he is prone to paws up on the kitchen worktops. Thank goodness the bowl was not full and we only had a case of the splat-bots for a couple of days. Could have been much much worse. We were lucky.
Training - 8/10. Once he understands what I am asking for, he is usually happy to oblige. He is resistant to lying down on command at the moment and has an almost comical mulish expression. However, as soon as he learns that I can keep telling him for longer than he can hold out, we will get along quicker.
The Cage - 2/10. I don't know if he has been in one before, but he hates being shut in it. He is happy to go in and out when he wants, which is what happens if I am reading or doing my pinning or sewing, but once he knows that the door is about to be shut, it becomes closer to a free-for-all. He shouts at the top of his voice, so both lots of neighbours have been warned. However, he must learn to go in, lie down and have a sleep safe in the knowledge that I will return. So perseverance is obviously the watchword here.
Overall - 8/10. Rufus is a delightful dog and the previous owner's loss is our gain. He just needs a firm hand and plenty of exercise and we will have a cracking dog on our hands.
